Welcome to THE PARENTING EDIT Blog!

OMG! Our first blog ever! We thought our first entry should introduce who we are, how we have come to be and what we are all about!

So who are we?

Well we is me, Courtney!

• A Special Needs Primary School Teacher, teaching over 11 years and prior to this working with children in Early Childhood

• A behaviour specialist

• An Infant and Toddler Sleep Expert

• Wifey to Travis, a local Perth Firefighter, who I met at my classroom door when teaching his son - a story I will have to share another time!

• Mum to our beautiful daughter Quinn, who is nearly 3 and gorgeous son Knox, who is 6 months

• And Step-Mum to my vibrant 13yo Step-Son Lachlan who has Williams Syndrome

Originally from sunny Tauranga, New Zealand, I landed in beautiful Perth in 2009, after receiving a Bachelor in Education - Teaching Primary and Post-Graduate Diploma in Education - Special Education.

Upon landing in Perth I found myself working in an Education Support Centre and quickly came to discover that Special Education was where I wanted to be - but particularly right in the middle of the tricky, difficult and sometimes down-right crazy behaviours!

You name it, I’ve probably seen it!

Moulding and shaping behaviour is what I love! I am all about seeing children supported with effective research-based strategies, because let's be honest, navigating life as a parent (or in any caring role of a child) is one set of crazy challenges after another.

Over my 11+ years of teaching, I have worked with children and families from a multitude of …

• Backgrounds

• Cultures

• Physical disabilities

• Intellectual disabilities

• Trauma

• Anxiety

• Behavioural needs

• and ages.

I have worked with professionals from Child Protection Services as well as Psychologists, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists, all with the motivation to ensure my students were supported holistically.

Now how did we come to be?

All throughout my teaching experience I have had exhausted parents talk to me about what they can do to help manage their child’s behaviour in the best way.

Although the research out there is amazing and big-parenting-authors have the most incredible tips and tricks for managing behaviour, Mums and Dads just need some super specific, practical and positive solutions for THEIR family.

They also need a cheerleader - someone who is supporting THEM in supporting their child. Someone who can look from the outside (no judgement attached) and identify what’s working and what needs tweaking!

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual. Every family is so vastly and gloriously different and every child is so individually and beautifully made.

So, in knowing what I know about behaviour I was motivated to research the science behind sleep. With this I attained an Internationally Accredited Certification in Infant and Toddler Sleep.

I am all about sleep! The science behind it is huge! Sleep deprivation is linked to so many health problems and not just physical ones either, it's the emotional, mental and social stuff too. Often times our children’s behaviour is linked to sleep - if we can get that part sorted early on, we find a lot of tricky behaviours disappear. I don’t know about you, but when I am sleep deprived, I am not nearly as cool, calm or collected as I usually am. Sleep matters!

Behind the name

So what does EDIT mean? To analyse, select, adapt and alter!

We analyse - the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW of the situation

We select appropriate practical evidence-based strategies

We adapt and alter until we find what works for you and your family

Life is constantly changing and we are constantly ‘editing’ life around us and within us so let’s embrace change, let it strengthen us and motivate us to be better and do better!

So what are we all about?

Embracing the glorious chaos of parenthood! It’s not perfect, nor should it be! So take the pressure of yourself!

Building on what you already know, you know your child best

Providing PRACTICAL & STRAIGHT-FORWARD guidance, strategies and tools - no judgement attached!

We won’t just tell you the HOW, we will also tell you the WHY

We will empower you to feel more confident, decisive and consistent

We see your child holistically, considering age and stage of development as well as the social, emotional and physical needs

We are all about SELF-CARE! You can’t pour from an empty cup, so we are here to support you in taking care of yourself! This is a major part of our effectiveness as parents.

And… we are going to have FUN while we do it! Let’s keep a sense of humour.. because if we don’t laugh, we will probably cry (or drink all the wine!)

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I am looking forward to sharing more with you!
